Spa-Like Bathroom Tips for the Home

Why go to the spa when you can have it from the comfort of your own home? Creating a spa-like bathroom is way easier than you might think.

Don’t get me wrong—nothing beats going to the spa. I love going with a girlfriend, drinking cucumber water, getting a hot stone massage, and ending it all in the steam room. The only caveat is I rarely get the opportunity to go! It’s a whole process—from booking an appointment to finding a day I’m free, and making sure someone can watch the kids, there are just too many variables. That’s why I’ve decided to bring the spa to me! And even better? I can tell you how to create a spa-like bathroom, too! Below, you’ll find all my tips and tricks to achieving the spa-like bathroom of your dreams. Just keep in mind that you don’t need to do all of these to get the feel of a spa, but it’s a great starting point!

Free-Standing Tub

One of the first things I notice when I walk into a bathroom is the bathtub situation. A lot of people have ones that double as their shower, but there’s just something about a free-standing (not sunken) tub that screams spa to me! It becomes the focal point of your space and gives off some major spa-like bathroom vibes. Just imagine getting into a tub with hot water and essential oils, then lighting a candle and reading a novel. This is what dreams are made of.

Steam Room and/or Sauna

My absolute favorite part of going to a spa is the steam room and sauna. A sauna has major health benefits like toxin removal, muscle recovery, and assists with blood circulation. A steam room or steam shower, on the other hand, is great for burning calories, opening up sinuses, and promotes skin health. If you only have room for one, I say go for the steam room. It has super similar benefits to a sauna but is easier to manage.

Neutral Tones

Think of the last spa you went to—did you notice anything about the colors of the space? I’m willing to bet it was super neutral and didn’t vary a lot. The last thing you want is a pop of color or a bright pattern in the spa, so take that same way of thinking to your own spa-like bathroom! By sticking with neutral tones and natural elements, you’re setting the mood to remain calm and relax in your safe haven.

Neutral tones + Luxury linens

Luxury Linens

If you’ve ever been handed a scratchy towel at the gym or had to endure a stiff one at a hotel, I feel for you. But, you know the one place you can always count on having luxurious, plush towels… the spa! I think it’s absolutely essential to invest in high-quality, luxury linens to achieve the spa-like bathroom of your dreams. Find a sturdy hook that looks chic and place it next to your free-standing tub not only for accessibility, but because it gives the space a lived-in feel, too.

Textured Accents

Adding textured accents to your spa-like bathroom is one of my favorite tips on this list. I love looking at the tiles first—you can add layers of texture anywhere. And if you’ve been following the latest in home trends, a wet room style is just what the doctor ordered. Essentially, every surface of your bathroom is tiled and can get wet. It’s elevated and serene which gives the space tons of character.

Built-In Speakers

When you go to the spa, what’s one thing you love? For me, I’m drawn to the soothing music playing. I love that the speakers are always hidden and built-in which adds to the relaxing ambience. If you don’t have the budget to create built-in speakers, opt for a sleek-looking speaker that blends into your space well. As long as you have access to a speaker of some sort, you’ve got it covered.

Subtle Lighting

Another aspect all luxury spas have in common is subtle lighting. Stark, bright lighting is a big no-no, which is why I recommend at least getting dimmers for your space. Another way to expand on the spa-like feel within the bathroom is to place lighting under your cabinets. It’s a design feature some overlook but can really make a huge difference in the look and feel of your bathroom. Fair warning, your friends might beg to come over and use your “spa”!

Fresh Plants

I also like to add small, fresh plants in all the nooks and crannies inside of a bathroom. You don’t need anything too extravagant or full of color. I tend to stick to greenery and plants that can thrive in dark spaces, like aloe vera or even a spider plant! Adding fresh, small plants will bring life into the space and create somewhat of an oasis.

Eucalyptus Spray

Lastly, I recommend adding eucalyptus spray to your bathroom… especially if you have a steam room. Heck… even if you have a shower it will get the job done! The smell will open up your sinuses and just bring about a feeling of relaxation. Dreamy to the max.
