I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of decorating for the holidays. I love starting the decoration process quite early for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween, and Easter. Whatever holidays you celebrate, I’m here for it!
It’s all about the transition and going from one seasonal element to the next. This is also very true when you’re going from Fall to Spring or Summer to Winter. There’s something to be said about designing your space to make it appropriate for the season. The perfect way to do that is through your pillow and decor items.

What are the benefits of changing pillow covers?
The benefits of changing your pillow covers are not only to make your room feel cozy and lived in but also comfortable. It’s also about setting the mood and tone for your space during the holidays. I feel like pillows are the finishing touch that pulls the room together and truly determines whether your space will have a more modern or classic look. If you’re going for linen, pattern, velvet, or leather, your pillow should speak to its surroundings.
Where are some places that you can place pillows?
Through my work, I have seen pillows placed in many locations all over the home. However, I typically prefer them on an entryway bench, chair, sofa, sectional, and a window seat. Don’t be afraid of a little unexpected. Try to mix & match both patterns and textures.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures
There are many options at your fingertips, particularly when it comes to pillow cover materials. However, I think going for a cotton cover with a pattern and pairing it with a cozy texture is a great choice. Although, I have added a leather pillow here and there and some other various other fabrics with textures to add variation and depth with much success.
Another great way to add texture is to add pillow covers with the following:
- Leather detail.
- Felt detail.
- Button detail.
- Zipper detail.
I think that there’s an endless amount of options, and it’s such a great time to bring them out and layer them in.

Play with seasonal colors
Playing with seasonal colors is an amazing first step when picking out your pillows for the seasons. Starting with color helps set the mood and encourages you to feel festive.
Spring Tones
I think that spring tones speak to sage green and mustard variations mixed with different colors of ivories and creams. You can always add a fun little pop of a deep blue or rust for contrast
Summer Tones
When it comes to summer, I love to mix it up by going more neutral and sticking with those bright whites and textures.
Fall Tones
I love the deep greens and those moody blues, mixed with an array of deep oranges in the Fall. I think that’s such a fun way to incorporate Autumn hues, and you can definitely take advantage of those colors for the season.
Winter Tones
I’m a big fan of the winter. I’m all about gray. I just love the way that grays feel in the winter. I feel like they speak to the season and the mood and make me want to get warm & cozy. Here are my favorite shades of gray:
- Greige
- Gray
- Dark Gray
- Charcoal
- Nickel
- Pewter

Pattern Tips
When thinking about colors and their impact, I also think about patterns. My favorites are a good pinstripe, a pattern, or something that’s hand-block printed, or an organic and eclectic touch. I think that you should mix and look for classic patterns and patterns that are uncommon or unique.
I enjoy mixing a variety of patterns to achieve that eye-catching finish, and the mixes I suggest are listed below:
- Floral + Geometric + Solid color
- Buffalo Check + Eclectic + Ticking Stripe
- Stripe + Dotted + Knit texture
Depending on the style you’re going for in your home and what you’re looking for will dictate the pattern pairing that you will choose.
Choose Three Pattern Sizes
Size is also extremely important in the pillows you choose. You should be thinking about lumbar support as pillows can be both stylish and functional.
I recommend starting with 14 x 20 and then go larger with a lumbar if you have a large sectional. Then I like to stagger in kind of like a pyramid scheme or a vignette, where you have 18 to 20 inches on the side, and then in the back corners, you have a 22 to a 24-inch pillow to round out space.
Additional Tips
Another way to add seasonal elements to your home would be by adding planters. Change your plants in the front yard and change up your indoor greenery alongside some smaller decor pieces. Bring a wreath to your front door, or create some festive floral arrangements inside, although my absolute favorite way is by adding candles as they can not only look stunning and add well-needed color, the smell can make it feel warm and seasonal.
When someone steps into your home and they’re met with a warm, inviting scent, the smell is so noticeable and memorable that every time they smell that same scent, they will think of you and your home. I always want it to smell like my season. So I’m so excited about all of our candle collection this year. And I think that is going to be the best way to round out your seasonal decor.
