How to Make an Eloquently Lived-In Home

Even though I style and design homes for a living, I still prefer the look of a lived-in home any day of the week.

Of course, having your house look like it’s straight out of a catalog sounds good, but in reality, it’s not attainable. If even one thing is out of place, it throws off the whole vibe. And I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to be doing all day is cleaning and tidying up the smallest of things. Another upside to having the look of a lived-in home is that it feels more welcoming. Wouldn’t you like for your guests to walk in and instantly feel comfortable? I know I sure do! Continue reading for my quick and easy tips on how to make an eloquently lived-in home for you and your guests to enjoy.

Embrace Antiques

I absolutely love sourcing vintage pieces for my clients, especially when they don’t have their own to pull from. If you have antiques from your parents or grandparents, take another look at them! Chances are, they can either be refurbished or spruced up. Having little momentos, regardless of how big or small they are, will make your house feel like a home. Whether it’s an antique pitcher, sconces, cabinet, or bed frame, I urge you to embrace antiques.

Use Old and New Pieces

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for vintage. Whether it’s a rug from our shop or a unique platter passed down from generation to generation, those types of pieces bring a room character. Instead of just buying your items from trendy and popular stores, be sure to mix in a bit of the “old.” And by old, I mean actually old, yes, but also older styles. For example, you can pair a new couch with an “old” coffee table, and the end result will look like a perfectly lived-in home.

Natural Lighting + Bright Bulbs

There’s just something about natural light streaming into a room that makes it feel so homey. If you have tons of windows, make sure you utilize them all! Blackout shades need to be thrown out… instead, invest in modern shades that can be pulled up or down. I also suggest using bright light bulbs in all of your lamps and recessed lighting.

Light Some Candles

Smell plays a big factor in a home. When you think of the best smells in the world, I’m willing to bet it has a lot to do with a person you love. Whether it’s the smell of a man’s cologne or the whiff you get when you walk into your grandmother’s house, there are all sorts of good smells. If you want to make your home a haven, all you really need to do is light some candles. Place them around your home not only for the romantic aspect but for the aroma they will give off.

Add Lots of Greenery

One way to make a living space feel stark is by having a lack of greenery. In order to give it more of a lived-in vibe, throw in some green plants and fresh blooms throughout your home. Whether it’s our faux olive tree, a real cactus, or anything in between, it will give your house the boost it needs!

Display Your Books

I also love the idea of displaying reading books! Whether you dedicate them to a singular space like a bookshelf or place small stacks throughout your home, it’s a great way to show off personality. There’s just something about little personalized elements in a home that make it as unique as the homeowner!

Put Up Art

Blank walls are completely devastating and no fun to look at. Not only does artwork bring a touch of elegance, but it’s a great talking point, too! Whether it’s a print you found on a trip or is a canvas by one of your favorite local artists, art is a sure way to make your home feel lived-in.

Invest in Comfy Rugs

Last but not least, invest in comfy rugs! Just make sure you have some ultra-comfy ones in key areas like your bathroom and kitchen. If you’re constantly walking around on scratchy rugs or cold wood, you won’t feel comfortable. And comfort is key to making your house feel like a true home.
