When it comes to decorating your home, it’s always best to start with a clean slate. A fresh space can eliminate distractions and let you see what you truly have to work with. When the Lindye Galloway Studio starts a new build or remodel project, we love to start from scratch. This helps us better see what could truly benefit your space and help you reach your specific vision and goals.
If you want a luxurious interior design, there’s a process you’ll definitely have to follow. We are laying that out for you in this article to give you a better idea of how to make your vision come to life.
How to Decorate Your Home
1. Measure Your Room
The first step here is to measure your room, so you can figure out the proper scale of the furniture and other pieces of decor you want to implement in that space. We personally love oversized light fixtures, comfy statement chairs, beautiful textiles, and wood round or rectangular coffee tables. These design elements require you to measure your space so everything properly flows together.
2. Get a Birds Eye of Your Room (Floorplan)
To help with these all-important measurements, you’ll want to make a floor plan. The floor plan should map out the elements you want to include. If you’re not an artist, it’s okay. Just draw a doodle in its place, making sure it’s to scale and in perspective.
If you also make note of each item’s shape or texture, you’ll be able to map out things a lot more efficiently as well. For example, you may notice a lot of geometric items on your floor plan, meaning you might want to throw in a round coffee or side table to add an organic balance.
3. Create a budget
Luxury interior designs may require a larger budget than other plans, but you can still create a luxury feel on any budget with proper planning. Having a budget can help narrow down your selection and give you a better understanding of what you’re looking for and why. It helps you make smarter, more impactful choices since every selection counts towards a total budget you are looking to not go over. This can help filter out options while shopping. Purchase a few statement pieces and then find affordable alternatives as accents.
4. Choose your design
When it comes to luxury interior designs, popular aesthetics include coastal, modern coastal, and contemporary. If you look closer at what these styles entail, you can start a list of materials, finishes, and furniture that fit into that specific theme. For example, a coastal home would have a focus on the paint colors, trim, and millwork. A contemporary home would be very selective when it comes to tile, texture, and marble.
5. Decide if you want to start from scratch
You or your family’s lifestyle can influence the design. For example, if you live by the beach, you have a great opportunity to throw in shades of blue or add some nautical flair with themed artwork and accessories. But if you’re willing to start from scratch, you could also redesign your entire space from scratch, like repainting your walls, adding matching furniture, and even changing the flooring and shape of the space by moving or adding walls.
How to decorate each room
1. Decorating Your Living Room
When it comes to decorating your living room, always start with the larger pieces of furniture. If there’s already a piece you love — like a vintage rug or console — that you want to work around, start from there.
The living room should feel lived in and bespoke, and really be a reflection of you and your family’s lifestyle.
A common mistake people make in their living room decorating is not leaving enough room for chair legs to go on the rug or getting too small of a rug. This goes back to proper measurements and a useful floor plan.

2. Decorating Your Bedrooms
First, you must focus on the scale and size of the room so you can figure out the best placement for your bed. The wall you choose is called a “bed wall.” Sometimes it makes sense to accent that wall with paint or wallpaper. From there, figure out lighting and furniture, along with comfortable accents.
A common mistake people run into when decorating bedrooms is the rug size. Some people also don’t leave enough room for additional furniture, like an end-of-bed seat or a fun accent chair. You definitely want to play around with scale for that reason.
3. Decorating Your Children’s Rooms
Children’s rooms are fun spaces to decorate. It’s always really important to gauge your child’s age, taking into account their crib, twin bed or daybed. Consider if you’ll ever need enough room for a full or queen. From there, work around that space by incorporating your child’s personality as much as possible, really letting it shine through. If you go with a neutral palette, add some color or artwork that showcases their character or interests.
4. Decorating Your Kitchen
Kitchens are all about materials and finishes. Our favorite thing about designing a kitchen would definitely be the finishing process; going through the slab yard and picking out a slab we feel best represents our client’s vision. Then working with mixing metals or sticking with brass and antique brass to really get the overall vibe of the kitchen. It makes the most sense to determine the aesthetic of the kitchen first and then find accompanying finishes, then topping it off with beautiful accents and hardware that make everything cohesive.
A common mistake people make when decorating their kitchen is incorporating too many different things inside the space. You want to stick to a singular theme since kitchens do have so many items and appliances. It should be a neutral and simple space with beautifully curated finishes rather than something that looks thrown together.
5. Decorating Your Dining Room
You should always start with the dining room table when decorating a dining room. Figure out the size of your space and then choose a large piece of furniture. Find accent chairs to go along with the dining room table. Think of the motif — round or rectangular — and use that to influence your design.
A common dining room decor mistake is mixing wood finishes that don’t feel cohesive. A lot of people are also unaware of what rug would work with their dining room setup. It’s almost always safe to go with a rug that’s the same shape of the dining room table, but this can really depend on the design aesthetic and the shape and size of the room and furniture.
6. Decorating Your Home Office
You probably guessed it, but your home office should revolve around your desk. This can be a built-in desk or a free-standing desk. You should also consider the room’s windows. If there’s a view you enjoy, you should decorate the room by determining a floor plan and elevation that allows you to take in those views. The artwork is also great for large walls and spaces, as well as fun-sized accent home decor pieces and a cool accent chair.
