The Lowdown on Ceiling Treatments

Let’s be real, ceilings are no celebrity when it comes to design recognition; but that doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to be in the limelight! In all actuality, they help define and identify a space and create drama! I’m here to give you the lowdown on my favorite go-to ceiling treatments that help create dimension in our home designs. So, grab your popcorn, I can assure you there will be none used here!

Exposed Beams

Exposed beams are a definite favorite when it comes to ceiling treatments! I work with a lot of different style beams and love the variations that can be played with. Anything from clean and crisp for a modern approach or rustic for more farmhouse approach. They keep everything light and bright and are a distinct statement. I most often use exposed beams in living rooms or bedrooms to add a WOW moment. When working with exposed beams, I would suggest a ceiling height of 10 feet or higher to ensure there is enough space for the exposed beams to drop down.

Box Beams

Let’s think INSIDE the box! Box beams assist in adding a more traditional, formal feel and are a great way to add dimension and texture to a space! Usually, these beauties are used in main areas such as the dining room, living room, and kitchen. You can’t go wrong!

Tongue & Groove

If you are looking to take your ordinary ceiling up a notch, tongue and groove (also known as “T&G”) is a great way to add a higher end look to your home! We tend to use this style most in bedrooms and the bonus is that if you’re stuck with 8 foot ceilings these don’t take up much room installed. But it’s even better if you’ve got vaulted ceilings! Naturally, this look offers more of a coastal modern feel and is perfect for beachy style homes. Because T&G is less distracting, it pairs great with wallpaper and is versatile with many different paints or stains! I prefer to stick to whites and really light stains but there are exceptions for dark ceilings such as libraries, bar areas, man caves or a den where you are trying to create a moody intimate feel!
